1) What was the problem for Sebastian and Viola as they sailed near Illyria?
They had run out of food and were starving.
There was a terrible storm and the ship sank.
They hadn't had a wash for two weeks.
2) What did Viola do when she landed on Illyria's coast?
She disguised herself as a man and went to get a job in Duke Orsino's court.
She made sandcastles and went for a quick swim.
She borrowed the captain's clothes and went as quickly as she could to Lady Olivia's household.
3) Why was it Viola's first job to visit Lady Olivia?
She had to do what she was told.
To try and get a better job - Lady Olivia had a larger household.
Duke Orsino wanted her to deliver his messages of love.
4) Lady Olivia's Uncle (Sir Toby) had a plan - what was it?
To play a nasty trick on Duke Orsino.
To get his friend Sir Andrew Aguecheek to marry Olivia - he wanted to use his money!
To prevent Malvolio from talking to Olivia
5) When Viola arrives at Lady Olivia's house, Malvolio blocks the way - what happens?
Viola was allowed in and her disguise had a strong effect - Olivia began to fall in love with her.
Viola tricked Malvolio by showing him a fake letter.
Viola got extremely angry and gave away her disguise.
6) What does Lady Olivia do after Viola (disguised as Cesario) has left?
She immediately contacts Duke Orsino.
She makes an excuse to get Malvolio to send a ring to 'him'.
Calls her entire household together to announce that the mourning for her brother is now over.
7) What did Malvolio discover later than night?
A letter addressed to him from Lady Olivia.
Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Maria making a lot of noise.
Fabian climbing through an upstairs window.
8) Why was Maria keen to get revenge on Malvolio?
She hated the way Malvolio always thought he was better than her.
Malvolio was always drinking too much, causing her and others in the household trouble by his loud behaviour.
He had accused her of making lots of noise, when she had actually asked Sir Toby and Sir Andrew to be quiet.
9) The letter to Malvolio is planted.  What did the letter say?
You owe a lot of money.  The only way to cancel your debt is to show off in front of Lady Olivia.  Wear yellow stockings, a bright green doublet and walk around quickly.
If you want to keep your job start smiling, wear yellow stockings and dance about the court - you're too boring!
I cannot say this to your face, but I love you.  If you have any feelings for me please show this by wearing yellow cross gartered stockings and smiling broadly.
10) What did Malvolio do the next day?
Turned up at Olivia's room, dressed according to the letter.  He said that he loved her and smiled the whole time.
Woke Olivia up early, and announced his love and eternal devotion to her.
Wondered around the household with a gloomy expression, ordering the other servants about.
11) How did Lady Olivia react?
She was frightened and certain Malvolio had gone mad.  She called Sir Toby to save her.
She listened very carefully and then proposed to Malvolio.
She dismissed Malvolio telling him not to be so silly.  She asked the clown to come and cheer her up.
12) Why was Sir Toby worried when Olivia sent for Cesario (Viola)?
He thought it was very odd for a woman to be so interested in another woman.
He wanted to make sure Olivia didn't give away any more rings.
He thought his own wedding plans for Olivia were in trouble.
13) What did Sir Toby tell Cesario (Viola) and Sir Andrew?
To grow up and act their age.
That Malvolio was locked in a dark room and could do with some visitors.  If he didn't have any visitors he would be permanently mad.
Told Cesario that Sir Andrew was going to kill 'him', and told Sir Andrew that Cesario was going to kill him.
14) A duel between Cesario and Sir Andrew begins, and both were terrified.  Who stepped in, and why did he/she stop the fight?
Sir Toby stepped in to stop the fight because he thought his practical joke had gone too far.
Antonio stepped in to defend Cesario because he thought that it was Sebastian.
Maria stepped in to defend Sir Andrew because she thought it was the right thing to do.
15) How did Viola react when she heard the name Sebastian?
She was overjoyed - she knew her long lost brother and closest friend was alive!
She was annoyed - her disguise was blown and she would have to stop having so much fun.
She didn't really react - she was just glad to be rescued from the duel.
16) Why was Lady Olivia angry with Viola when she met her after the duel?
Viola was not wearing the ring she had given her.
Lady Olivia had met Sebastian and arranged to marry him, not realising that he was Viola's identical twin brother.
Viola had been to weak to finish the duel, and this was a sign that 'he' wasn't prepared to fight for Olivia.
17) When Sebastian and Viola meet, the other members of the cast suddenly realise what had been going on.  What had been going on?
Sebastian and Viola looked so alike that everyone else couldn't tell them apart.  This meant that everyone had got mixed up and thought there was just one person.
Sir Toby had played a trick on everyone, and it only became clear now.
As they were identical twins, Sebastian and Viola could never be in the same place at once.
18) Who did Lady Olivia and Duke Orsino marry?
Lady Olivia married Cesario and Duke Orsino married Viola.
Lady Olivia married Malvolio and Duke Orsino married Cesario.
Lady Olivia married Sebastian and Duke Orsino married Viola.
19) Why might we think it odd that Duke Orsino marries Viola so quickly?
Duke Orsino would surely have been angry at Viola for disguising herself and tricking him.  The Duke could never marry someone who had deceived him.
Duke Orsino was too depressed to marry anyone.
Duke Orsino had spent the entire play trying to get Lady Olivia's attention - but he never went to visit her himself.  It is a very short time between learning the truth about Viola and marrying her!  Perhaps he wasn't so deeply in love with Olivia.
20) Who has the final words in the play?
Malvolio - promising to get his revenge on everyone.
The Clown (Feste), singing a conclusion.
Sir Toby Belch having a drink to celebrate.
